Permanent residence card in Poland
Permanent residence permit (zezwolenie na pobyt stały) is a document that allows a foreigner to reside in Poland permanently. The plastic is issued for a period of up to 10 years and is one of the most important stages of legalization. After obtaining it, you can work without a permit, apply for loans, buy real estate and apply for citizenship.
This type of permit provides more rights than a temporary permit. It is not tied to a specific employer or educational institution, so it gives freedom in choosing a place of work, residence and activity. Permanent residence is stability that is valued by foreigners who plan to stay in Poland for a long time.
Who can get a permanent residence card?
Permanent residence can be obtained by foreigners who meet certain requirements. The main grounds include:
- A stable source of income – official work, pension, business or other confirmed funds.
- Owning housing that meets sanitary standards (rent or ownership).
- No criminal record and violations of immigration law.
- Pass an interview with an inspector in Polish.
- Has Polish family roots (one of the parents, a grandmother or grandfather, or two great-grandfathers and a great-grandmother).
It is worth noting that each category has its own nuances that can affect the results and decisions, so it is important to properly prepare for the application.

Advantages of a permanent residence card for foreigners in Poland
Obtaining a card of this format opens the door to a stable and comfortable life for a foreigner, providing many advantages.
- Permanent residence and free access to the labor market. You can live in Poland, change jobs without additional permits, open your own business and enjoy all rights on an equal basis with citizens of the country, except for the right to vote in elections.
- Free crossing of the borders of the Schengen area. With an open permit, you can freely travel through the 27 countries that make up this association. Border control requirements have been abolished between them. The total travel period is 90 days within a six-month period without the need to apply for a visa. This greatly simplifies visiting other countries and business trips.
- Access to social benefits and services. Holders of a permanent residence permit are entitled to social benefits, pensions and other state benefits. Your children can study at schools and universities on the same terms as Polish citizens.
- Possibility of family reunification. You can legalize your family’s stay so that they can obtain their own residence card based on your status. This creates a solid foundation for family life.
- Simplified procedure for obtaining mortgages and loans. Banks are more willing to provide loans and mortgages to holders of a permanent residence card, as this confirms their stability and long-term intentions.
In addition, a permanent residence card in Poland is another step towards official citizenship, suitable for people who plan to stay in the country permanently.
Process of application and required documents
The procedure and algorithms for submitting an application require attention and thorough preparation. This affects not only the terms of consideration, but also the decision, which can be positive or negative. Therefore, carefully read all the stages:
- Preparation of the application. Submitted to the voivodeship office at your place of residence. The form can be obtained directly from the office or downloaded from the official website. It must be filled out in Polish, in block letters, without corrections.
- Formation of a package of documents. It is necessary to collect a full set of supporting documents regarding the grounds for obtaining a permanent residence card. This includes: the original and copies of a foreign passport, 4 photos, evidence that you have Polish roots or a Pole’s card, a certificate of no criminal record and financial capacity, a medical policy.
- Submission of documents. You need to make an appointment with the voivodeship office. In most regions, a system of preliminary online registration is in place. When submitting, you must submit fingerprints.
- Payment of the state fee. The amount of payment must be specified at the time of submission. Payment can be made at the office or by bank transfer to the specified account. A receipt must be attached.
- Waiting for a decision. The consideration period depends on the complexity of the case and the region. On average, the procedure takes from 6 to 12 months. During this time, the office may request additional documents or explanations.
Common mistakes of candidates
- Incomplete package of documents or lack of translations certified by a sworn translator.
- Submitting an application with expired documents (for example, a foreign passport).
- Providing inaccurate or unconfirmed information.
- Ignoring letters or requests from the voivodeship administration.
Why should you contact specialists?
Even minor errors or inconsistencies can lead to serious consequences: from a delay in consideration for several months to a complete refusal of status. For example, if one of the documents has become invalid between submission and consideration, the inspectorate has the right to suspend the case. Such situations are difficult to predict without experience, but experts know which papers should be updated before filing, and which can be prepared in advance.
Finally, professional support saves time and reduces stress. Instead of searching for information yourself, visiting the inspection several times, waiting in lines, you get a clear action plan, a list of necessary steps and support at every stage. This is especially important for those who work, raise children or do not speak Polish.
Turning to specialists significantly reduces the risk of errors, helps to avoid typical pitfalls and makes the process more predictable and transparent.

Questions and answers
Do I need to have a valid visa or temporary permit at the time of applying for a Permanent Residence Card?
+Yes, a permanent residence card requires permanent residence in the country. This means that you must have a valid temporary residence permit, a valid visa, a long-term EU resident permit (pobyt rezydenta dłogónim UE) or another legal basis (e.g. refugee status or subsidiary protection). Filing an application does not suspend the validity of your current permit. However, if it expires during the consideration of your application for permanent residence, you remain in Poland legally based on the stamp in your passport.
What are the main reasons for refusal to issue a Permanent Residence Card?
+These may include:
- lack of stable income;
- unconfirmed place of residence;
- invalid health insurance;
- violation of Polish law in the past;
- recognition of a threat to defense, state security or public order;
- failure to pay stamp duty;
- formal errors in the application.
Each refusal is accompanied by a written justification.
Do I need to renew my Permanent Residence Card? How is this done?
+The status itself is unlimited in terms of validity. However, a physical plastic card is usually issued for 10 years. It must be replaced in advance. The replacement process is similar to the initial receipt:
- you need to register with the migration office;
- apply for a new card;
- a valid passport, a current photo, pay a stamp duty (50 PLN);
- provide biometric data.
You also need to confirm that you still live in Poland. You should start replacing the card 2-3 months before the expiration date of the current one.
Is it possible to get a permanent residence card without having Polish roots?
+Yes, you can. However, this is a more complicated procedure. One of the most common reasons is marriage to a Polish citizen. Also, in some cases, you can obtain permanent residency after 5 years of continuous residence in the country and obtaining the status of a long-term EU resident. This procedure requires compliance with strict requirements.
