Deregistration of a vehicle in Poland

The procedure, known in Polish law as wyrejestrowanie pojazdu, is an irreversible action. It permanently removes the vehicle from the CEPiK road register. As of 2026, deregistration of a vehicle in Poland is strictly regulated. It is possible in cases clearly defined by law. Many owners confuse it with the usual notification of the sale of a car (zawiadomienie o zbyciu). However, these are different legal steps with different consequences for the owner.

The main reasons for which deregistration is carried out are complete disposal (scrap), theft or its final export abroad. The authorities of the Wydział Komunikacji require irrefutable evidence for each of these reasons. This is because the termination of registration automatically exempts the owner from the obligation to pay OC insurance premiums. This is strictly controlled by the state.

When is it necessary to deregister a car?

Businesses and individuals should understand that you cannot simply leave the car in the yard or dismantle it for parts. This is not a reason to stop charging taxes. Deregistration of the car must be carried out officially by submitting an application to the administrative body at the place of residence or company registration.

The 2026 legislation defines the following grounds for this procedure:

  • Transfer for dismantling (Kasacja). The car is transferred to a certified dismantling point, which issues an official certificate of disposal.
  • Theft. If there is an official police report on the termination of the case or confirmation of the fact of theft.
  • Export abroad. If the owner registers the car in another country (for example, in Ukraine) and provides confirmation of foreign registration.
  • Complete and irreversible loss of ownership. These are cases of natural disaster or fire, confirmed by the relevant services.
  • Sale abroad. When the buyer is a foreigner, and the car is leaving Poland.

Important nuances

It is important that after receiving a certificate of disposal or theft, the deregistration of the car is completed within 30 days. Delay in submitting the application may result in fines from the Insurance Guarantee Fund (UFG) due to the alleged lack of mandatory insurance for the current registered object.

Deregistration of a car for foreigners in Poland

For foreign citizens returning home or selling their car to another country, this procedure is of critical importance. If you are exporting a car with Ukrainian license plates that was previously registered in Poland, or you want to legally “write off” a Polish car, you must follow the established protocol. This is necessary in order not to remain a debtor in the EU databases.

USPI WORK recommends that foreigners pay attention to the following details:

  • Return of license plates — when deregistering due to export abroad, the plates are handed over to the Uzhend.
  • Obtaining export license plates — if the car is to drive on its own, temporary plates and a technical passport are issued.
  • Sworn translations — if the basis is a document issued outside Poland, it must be translated by a sworn translator.
  • Cancellation of insurance — only an official decision to deregister the car allows you to legally terminate the OC contract and return the funds for the unused period.
Important nuances
After submitting all the documents, the foreigner receives a decision to terminate the registration. This decision is the main document. It confirms that you are no longer responsible for this vehicle before the Polish state.

Notification of the insurance company and refund

The final chord of the procedure is communication with the insurer. If the car is deregistered, this entitles the owner to a refund of part of the insurance premium for the full months remaining until the end of the OC policy. Many people forget about this step, losing their own funds.

To get your money back, you need to:

  • Provide the insurer with a copy of the decision to deregister.
  • Write an application for the refund of the unused contribution amount.
  • Provide a bank account number for the funds to be credited.
Important nuances
This rule only works if the process is completely completed. If you simply sold the car within the country, the insurance passes to the new owner. In this case, the funds are not returned. Therefore, it is worth contacting specialists who know all the intricacies of the matter and will help you return part of the costs.

Is it possible to restore registration after deregistration?

Many owners are interested in whether it is possible to return a car to the register if it has already been deregistered. Polish legislation remains very strict in this regard. In most cases, the procedure is irreversible. For example, if a car has been scrapped, its registration cannot be restored under any circumstances.

However, there are exceptions when it is still possible to “cancel” the decision by re-registration. What are these situations:

  • Return from abroad — if the car was exported, registered in another country, and then re-imported to Poland as an import.
  • Rare and collector cars — cars of historical value can be restored to the register even after a long break.
  • Used cars found after theft — if the police found a car that had already been deregistered as stolen.
  • Agricultural tractors and trailers — for some types of special equipment, simplified rules for re-registration apply.

In all other cases, if you have completed the process of deregistration of the car, the way back is closed. Therefore, before submitting an application, you should carefully weigh all the circumstances. Especially if the reason is a short-term trip abroad. The legal irrevocability of the procedure is aimed at combating fraud and illegal circulation of vehicles on the secondary market.

Consequences of ignoring the deregistration procedure

Some owners believe that if the car is physically destroyed or sold for parts without documents, then it is not necessary to deregister it. This is a dangerous mistake that entails serious financial sanctions. As long as the vehicle is listed as active in the CEPiK system, it is obliged to have valid third-party liability insurance (OC).

It is worth knowing about the consequences of ignoring the official procedure. They include:

  • Huge fines from UFG. The Insurance Guarantee Fund automatically detects gaps in insurance and issues invoices.
  • Tax claims. Charges if the car is registered to a legal entity.
  • Administrative fines. For failure to submit an application for changes in the status of the vehicle within the established period.

Therefore, timely deregistration of a car is not just a formality, but a way to protect yourself from debts. The state requires a clear report on the fate of each unit of transport. Only having an official decision on deregistration in your hands can you be sure that your story as the owner of this object is completed correctly and without negative consequences.

History of the company's founders

History of the company's founders

More than ten years ago, Pavel and Antonina Gvozdev moved to Poland and personally faced a challenging task – the legalization process. Since there were no companies capable of professionally assisting with legalization in Poland at the time, they decided to undertake the process themselves.

In-depth study of the law, attention to detail, and practical experience in resolving complex situations allowed them not only to successfully legalize their business but also to acquire unique knowledge, which today forms the basis of their company’s operations.

Drawing on their experience, Pavel and Antonina founded a company that has been helping expats and employers in Poland for over 10 years. Today, they lead a team of specialists whose core values are professionalism, transparency, and results.

Over the years, the company has:

  • successfully supported hundreds of foreigners in the process of relocating and legalizing in Poland;
  • helped over 30 Polish companies address their personnel needs;
  • established itself as a reliable and responsible partner.

The story of Pawel and Antonina exemplifies how personal experience and a desire to help others can grow into a lifelong passion.

That is why the company’s mission has become to ensure the legal and comfortable stay of foreigners in Poland, as well as to support businesses in the employment of qualified employees.

Questions and answers

When exactly does a car need to be deregistered?

+

The procedure for deregistration of a car is mandatory immediately after the end of ownership. This is critically important when selling, exporting a car abroad or disposing of it. You should not postpone this step, as legal responsibility remains with you until the official registration. When selling, it is the seller who initiates the procedure to avoid future claims from tax authorities or the police regarding the actions of the new owner.

What is needed to deregister a car when selling it in Poland?

+

To successfully complete the procedure, you will need a standard package of documents: a passport and residence card, the original registration certificate (dowód rejestracyjny), Polish license plates and a correctly completed application (wniosek o wyrejestrowanie). The fact of sale is confirmed by a purchase and sale contract, which it is advisable to have with you. After the car deregistration is completed, you will receive an official coupon. It is a legal confirmation of your release from any liability for this vehicle.

Can I deregister a car if I have already left Poland?

+

Yes, this is possible, but independent implementation is a complex administrative task. To do this, you need to issue a notarized power of attorney for a representative in Poland who will have the right to act on your behalf. USPI WORK provides a full range of such services. We act as your legal representative to carry out the entire procedure for deregistration of a car without your physical presence, resolving all issues remotely.

What are the risks if you don't deregister a car after selling it?

+

The risks are significant and outweigh the financial and legal ones. As the formal owner in the register, you will continue to receive tax notices, bills for compulsory insurance (OC) and fines for traffic violations committed by the new driver. In the event of a serious accident, you may be held jointly liable.

What to do with numbers when deregistering?

+

Polish license plates are the property of the state. Therefore, they must be handed over to the Department of Communications when submitting the application. This is a standard requirement. If the plates are lost or damaged, you must write an additional explanatory statement about their destruction. Usually, in such cases, you will have to pay a small administrative fee.

Is the insurance money refunded after the car is deregistered?

+

Yes, this is the legal right of every owner. After you have received a decision from the Ministry of Internal Affairs to deregister your car, you should contact your insurance company. You will be refunded for each full day remaining until the end of the contract.
