Car registration in Poland: the main points

In 2026, the procedure for legalizing vehicles underwent significant changes. Car registration in Poland is now regulated by the updated Road Traffic Act, which introduced extended deadlines for submitting documents. If previously only 30 days were allocated for this, now individuals have 60 days, and entrepreneurs – up to 90 days to notify the acquisition of ownership and submit an application to the Department of Communications. This greatly facilitates the process, especially when additional preparation of documents or translations is required.

Standard car registration involves obtaining a temporary permit (the so-called “soft” technical passport), which is valid for 30 days. During this time, state authorities check the data in the CEPiK system and produce a permanent certificate. It is important to remember that since June 2026, Poland has abolished the obligation to physically submit license plates to an institution for their legalization. It is enough to submit a statement about their proper condition, which significantly speeds up the visit to the administration.

Stages and cost of registration

The price of registration services in 2026 was slightly adjusted due to the indexation of administrative fees. However, the general algorithm of actions has become more transparent and logical.

To successfully complete the procedure, you must complete the following steps:

• Step 1. Registration of OC insurance.
  Before submitting documents for registration, you must register for compulsory civil insurance. Without a valid OC policy, the inspector will not accept the application. Insurance can be registered online or at the insurance company’s office.
• Step 2. Passing a technical inspection (if necessary).
  Cars over 3 years old must have a valid technical inspection report. It is carried out at a diagnostic station and costs about PLN 100.
• Step 3. Preparation of documents.
  Collect all the necessary package. If there is a language barrier, it is better to use the help of a specialist from our company, which provides registration support services.
• Step 4. Sign up for an electronic queue or receive a coupon.
  In large cities, it is recommended to register online in advance. In Warsaw, there is a separate machine for foreigners marked “dla obcokrajowców”. Please note: queues can be long, so it is better to arrive as early as possible.
• Step 5. Filling out the application.
  On site, you receive or hand in a pre-filled application form. It indicates: owner data, vehicle characteristics (make, model, year of manufacture, VIN), previous registration number (if any).
• Step 6. Payment of fees.
  The cost of registration depends on the situation. You can pay cashless on site or by bank transfer to the county office account.
• Step 7. Handing in documents and old license plates.
  You hand in the entire package of documents together with the old license plates (if you are re-registering a used car). The employee checks the documents and enters the data into the system.
• Step 8. Obtaining plates and documents.
  After the inspection, you will be issued with new plates or keep the old ones, if you want, and a temporary registration certificate. The permanent Dowód Rejestracyjny will be sent by mail within 30 days or you can pick it up in person later.

It should be noted that the above sequence may vary slightly depending on whether the car is purchased in a showroom or from a private individual. Official dealers often take on some of the bureaucratic procedures. However, when buying a used car on the secondary market, the owner must independently monitor the deadlines for paying the tax on civil legal transactions (PCC). Following the sequence of these steps minimizes the risk of receiving a refusal from the registration authority and allows you to avoid the imposition of a penalty.

One of the main achievements of 2026 is full online vehicle registration via the gov.pl portal. This allows the owner to submit an application and digital copies of documents without a personal visit to the office.
